Mission area 03

Geology, Energy & Minerals

The mission area most clients meet first. Impartial scientific information on the continent's geologic resources and on the construction ground beneath every dam, port and pipeline — from critical minerals to foundation design parameters.

What we deliver

Engineering geology

  • Geological and geomorphological mapping
  • Rock mass classification and core logging
  • Tunnel geology and underground excavation advice
  • Rockface stabilisation and rock removal
  • Planning of blasting operations
  • Geological 3D models and geomonitoring

Geotechnics + site development

  • Dimensioning of shallow, piled and combined piled-raft foundations
  • Dimensioning of excavation pits and protective measures
  • Stability calculations and dam structure design
  • Excavation water management systems
  • Construction-ground modelling and evaluation of site investigations
  • Geotechnical and geological construction supervision

Ground investigation + geophysics

  • Rotary core drilling on land, in swamp and over open water
  • Standard Penetration Testing (SPT), CPT / SCPT and Dynamic Probing Light (DPL)
  • Trial pits, bulk and undisturbed sampling
  • Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Vertical Electrical Sounding
  • Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT) and MASW
  • Acoustic and optical borehole imaging (televiewer)
  • Lugeon, falling head and constant head permeability testing

Laboratory testing

  • Classification: moisture content, PSD, Atterberg limits, specific gravity
  • Strength: triaxial (UU/CU/CD), direct shear, unconfined compression
  • Compaction and pavement: Proctor, CBR, DCP correlation
  • Rock mechanics: UCS, point load, RQD, density and porosity
  • Chemistry: pH, acid reserve, sulphate, chloride, organic content
  • Concrete and aggregate: core compressive strength, aggregate quality

Raw materials

  • Prospection and site evaluation for gravel, sand, limestone, clay and ores
  • Feasibility studies and resource assessment
  • Extraction planning, supervision and recultivation

Landfills + geothermal

  • Landfill siting, planning, permitting, operation and monitoring
  • Leachate and groundwater surveillance, recultivation
  • Geothermal feasibility, borehole heat exchanger design and simulation
  • Thermal Response Testing (TRT / ETRT) and soil temperature measurement

Other mission areas

Most projects draw on more than one mission area. Tell us the structure and the site and we will assemble the right combination.

We make it happen

We read the ground. We de-risk the build.

From dam foundations on the Nile to transmission lines across the Great Lakes, our crews turn Africa's toughest sites into certainty you can build on.
